Community Involvement

MT|SHRM partners with community and non-profit organizations to provide chapter members opportunities to increase their skills while giving back to the community.

MT|SHRM is currently involved with Safe Haven and CHoiCeS.

Safe Haven
Safe Haven is the result of two nonprofits wanting to serve the homeless families of Nashville more efficiently. Separately, the shelters existed as Safe Haven Shelter and Nashville Family Shelter. In the fall of 2003, the decision was made to merge the two, and to serve 5 homeless families at a time. In addition to the shelter, there are 6 transitional homes, allowing Safe Haven to serve 11 families throughout Nashville.

The two organizations have provided service to homeless families for the last twenty years. The merger brought together a team of professionals to serve the families more efficiently.

Our Mission:  On a bi-weekly basis we partner with the residents to help construct their resumes & teach life skills in interviewing techniques & etiquette. Our serves extend to offer job leads and encouragement.

CHoiCeS

CHoiCeS is an interactive decision-making workshop that empowers teens to achieve academic success in pursuit of their career and life aspirations.

This spring, MT|SHRM sponsored six classes and UPS foundation matched one additional for a total of 7 classes that were conducted in April and mid-May. Unfortunately the floods and school closings reduced our original plans to train in 11-12 classes. We have trained ten MT|SHRM members (business leaders) to be trainers. We’ve trained 180+/- different students in the 7 classes. Goodwill will conduct 2 more classes this summer as part of their regular summer program curriculum for teens.

Goodwill applied for and received a grant from Predator’s Foundation for 12-14 more
CHoiCeS classes, plus the UPS foundation matching those = 24-28 more classes next fall. Debbie Grant and Betty Johnson will conduct another Train- the- trainer session in August to have even more trainers prepared.

What does that mean for our MT|SHRM membership?  In addition to the $900 MT|SHRM donated, we are relying on MT|SHRM members to become trainers. That is one of the keys to success—connecting business leaders with the kids in the classrooms and sharing their insight, experiences and knowledge.
