Members' Take on Topic:

Diversity Equals Letting Go of Stuff And Building Bridges For Understanding presented by Darren Johnson, the Letting Go Pro - InsideOut Learning, Inc.

Pictured above are Kathy Peck and Michael Hurdle. Kathy is the Human Resource Trainer for Trinity Marine Products, Inc. Michael Hurdle is an IT professional attending as Kathy’s guest.

Kathy’s comments were: “I am a trainer for six divisions of Trinity Marine Products Inc. in Missouri, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee. This diversity training will be extremely helpful to me as I train supervisors to manage our employees in these diverse areas of the country. I particularly liked the “Self-Managing Grid”, a tool that helps identify areas where one has some control and therefore can achieve positive goals, while making a conscious choice to let go of areas one cannot control. This tool can be helpful in any organization."

A number of you who attended the meeting asked for a copy of the poem guest speaker Darren L. Johnson read at the end of his presentation, The Cold Within by James Patrick Kinney.

The Cold Within

Six humans trapped by happenstance
In dark and bitter cold
Each possessed a stick of wood--
Or so the story's told............. (Click here for the rest of the poem - May 14th link)

Melanie Chapman contributed this article. Thanks Melanie!

The May 28 Meeting did not give us enough time to complete an article.

"The Hamster Revolution”…this is not about rodents up in arms!
Managing Email before it Manages You

“The typical professional will send and receive 20,400 emails in one year.” Is that YOU? Mike Song, coauthor of the book The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your Email before It Manages You.

Mr. Song has found a practical way to increase workforce productivity. “It is life changing,” he claims. If you follow some basic strategies, you can save ten to fifteen days per year while getting more done with less stress. You will cut emails by 20% and increase the quality of those emails by 35%. Aren’t you tired of the never ending, ineffectively written emails? Don’t you wonder how to get your real work done when you have so many emails to read and respond to?

The mantra Song wants you to live by is: Send Less, Get Less. Remember, over 20,000 emails are sent and received in one year by one person.
Ask yourself before you send an email:

  • Is it timely, relevant and complete?
  • Is it appropriate, compliant, professional or inoffensive?
  • Is it targeted and is this the best channel? For example, sometimes a phone call is a better way to communicate.

If an email is appropriate, make it count with clear, concise writing.

  1. Strengthen the subject line with an action, a request or confirmation.
  2. Sculpt the body of the email, meaning write less.
  3. Start with a brief warm greeting.
  4. Use a summary format: be specific, have purpose, list response time.
  5. Use bullet points or numbers for the background. Be relevant and clear in the points you make.
  6. Close with next steps and use auto signature.
